A Father’s Wisdom for the New Year

Our father was a natural leader. He was a fighter pilot and later, chief pilot of United Airlines. He was beloved and respected by people from all walks of life because he noticed them. He saw them…. with empathy. Even when he was angry, he could see the other person’s struggle and put himself in their shoes.  It was his desire and willingness to understand that brought his relationships to a deeper level and created a life of tremendous impact. At his retirement party, people told stories and thanked him for FOUR HOURS. He had helped them. He had supported them. He had stood up for them. He had listened to them. He had cried with them. He had fought for them. He had shown up for them. He had helped them do the right thing and sometimes, the hard thing. He had cared.

In his last years, we were fortunate enough to have him live with us. He was right there at the kitchen table when our children decided they wanted to help other children within the Naval Special Warfare community. He and Mom cut out stickers with our children, raised money, and encouraged us all as we navigated the unknown world of starting a non-profit. He brought his business experience, his patriotism, and his steadiness to the work we did, and he always, always pointed us back to the human side of the people we encountered. Even the most difficult person or problem was easier to understand when he helped you look through his lens…his heart. He knew what was important. He had perspective. He could forgive. He could hope. He looked for the good in others and in situations.

As we enter 2021 and celebrate SEALKIDS’ 10th anniversary year, I am so grateful for all that he taught us and for all that he gave. I wish he was here to see how far we’ve come. No one would be happier. No one would be prouder.

I’m not sure SEALKIDS would exist if we hadn’t been raised at his knee. Even as a child, he heard you, he saw you, he was there for you and your words were important to him. SEALKIDS is the result of everything he taught us. As we celebrate SEALKIDS 10th anniversary and all of the children we have helped, I will also be remembering the man who taught me to see others and to care deeply.

We are so thankful for the families we serve. It is our greatest privilege to be part of your child’s journey. We are grateful to all the donors who open their hearts. We hope you all make special memories with your loved ones this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year!

With love,

Suzanne and the SEALKIDS Team
